Obituary:

Samuel Z. Hechter, age 95 of Edina died peacefully on June 26, 2011 at Edina Park Plaza after a long, rich and full life. Samuel is preceded in death by his wife, Beatrice; and infant son, Jeffrey. He is survived and will forever be loved by his sons, Ronald, and Byron (Pattye) Hechter; grandchildren, Ariel, Samuel and Michael; sister, Carol Basurto; sister-in-law, Harriet Davis; and many nieces and nephews. Samuel was the consummate family man and his every business adventure or professional path embarked upon, was guided by his primary desire to provide for his family and create a lasting legacy for their benefit. Samuel was a tax attorney for the Department of Treasury, he was an entrepreneur owning and operating car wash businesses, nursing homes, apartment buildings, and he was an officer in Gold Medallion corporation. But his most meaningful business venture was his purchase of Southwind Orchards in southeastern Minnesota in the early seventies. For his remaining years, he nurtured the orchard's development and watched it grow and mature for the benefit of his children, grandchildren and the future generations envisioned in his mind's eye. The eternal optimist, he believed any difficult seasons or harvests would always be followed by a successful one. He maintained that attitude with his family always believing and living by example, that things will always work out. Samuel's family would like to express its gratitude for the love and care provided by the staff of Edina Park Place, especially Tammy and Theresa, as well as the caregivers of St. Jude's Hospice.
